The new electrostatics international standard has been released, IEC 61340-5-1:2024 Electrostatics – Part 5-1: Protection of electronic devices from electrostatic phenomena – General requirements, replacing the previous 2016 standard.

Summary of key updates are as follows:
- Additional and updated definitions including the optional alternative job title of ESD Control Program Manager or ESD Coordinator
- Insulators defined as materials and objects with a resistance greater than or equal to 1.0 x 1011 Ω
- Isolated conductors defined as materials and objects with a resistance less than 1.0 x 104 Ω
- Personnel grounding now includes reference to groundable static control garment systems (Table 2)
- New table (Table 4) for packaging requirements, including requirements for compliance verification of packaging
- Product Qualification Plan requirement
- Compliance Verification simplified by reference to 61340-5-4 for all ESD control items (replaces 6 standards in 2016 standard)
- Annex A has been updated to include examples of acceptable tailoring statements and rationale to assist understanding
